of the Board of Trustees and the Student Life Task Force.

theInternational Education Award, the Westhampton College
Diamond Award, and the Board of Associates Award for

After graduation, Laura obtained a
masters degree in Modern Middle East and North African Studies
from the University of Michigan . In 2005, Laura and her
husband, a former Richmond exchange student, moved to Jordan
where she became the editor of VIVA Magazine, an
English-language women's magazine. Between the pages of
fashion and beauty, VIVA highlights pioneering women across
fields and covers a range of social issues seldom tackled in
Jordanian society.
Personal Statement
The work of awareness building, and at
times, daring to question that VIVA strives to do reminds me of
my time at Richmond, where I learned the value of cross-cultural
dialogue. I also remember all those who encouraged me and others
to make a difference in our world, even when it requires
personal courage in the face of overwhelming resistance.
When I recently faced a setback, I didn't hesitate to contact
one of my professors from UR for his advice. I also now do
fundraising for my church by teaching Middle Eastern dance to
the international community in Jordan - that sure brings back
memories of fun times at UR!
What I gained from my experience at
Richmond has meant more than the piece of paper that is now
framed and hanging on my wall. I'm grateful for that.
