Personal Statement
While at
Richmond I really tried to connect with as many other
international students as possible which helped me learn so much
about the world and other cultures--I carry a passion for this
to this day. Now, living in D.C., I'm always looking out for
cultural events and connecting with the international community
here.
The friends I made
while studying abroad were some of the best friends I've had to
date. We still get together at least once a year if not more.
The lifestyle and culture I experienced in Argentina and Spain
lead me to seek other international opportunities after
graduation. I applied for many internships through
the Canadian government and was hired to go work for an
international NGO in Juliaca, Peru. My experience in Peru was
very different and much more intense than my previous study
abroad experiences. First off, I travelled alone, and instead of
living in a major city, I lived in a small city/rural mountain
town. I was the only English speaker for miles and I lived and
worked with locals the entire time. As cliche as it sounds, the
experience changed so much of my life, I gained a whole new
perspective and world view, and the experience really opened me
up to other opportunities and helped me better define my career
goals.
I worked with an organization called
Colectivo Integral de Desarrollo which helps young Peruvians
start their own business and become entrepreneurs. During my
time there, I helped host an international seminar with speakers
from Canada, Columbia, Argentina, United States, and Peru, it
was really great learning experience and I got to meet some very
interesting and intelligent people. I also did many things
in the community where I worked, I started a business English
class for my co-workers and some of our students and I also gave
a lecture as a guest speaker at the local university about the
role of the government in the development of the region.
After my experience in Peru and my work
experience in the United States, I've come to realize that what
I truly want to do is continue to work with local communities at
a grassroots level. I plan to pursue a Masters in Social
Work and Public Health.
