Darkroom: An Exhibition

This exhibition presents the drawings of Lila Quintero Weaver from her memoir Darkroom. A Memoir in Black & White (2012, UA Press). The images represent her childhood and work to bring her book to life in many ways. All of the images are originals drawn by the author, and while there is great variety between the content and style of the images, there is a clear visual theme connecting them all. When combined with the story of Lila Quintero Weaver, the images become a powerful media for demonstrating the impact of segregation and the American dream on her childhood and life as a whole. It is the combination of the words and images that generate powerful emotions from the reader. Here are some of the images that we believe demonstrate the beauty of her work. The selection of sketches and the writing of the texts that accompany them are a collective project of the course LAIS 309 Spanish Writing Workshop from the University of Richmond.

War and Graphic Design: Postcards from Sarajevo

Bojan Hadzihalilović is a graphic designer who lives and works in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. He is a founding member of TRIO design, one of the most innovative graphic design collectives in former Yugoslavia. As Bojan Hadžihalilović said, their works did not evolve “in some romantic time, but during the period of the collapse of Yugoslavia,” witnessing the war and destruction of Sarajevo. During the siege of the city from 1992-95, they created a series of postcards entitled “Greetings from Sarajevo” which quickly made their way beyond the besieged city. The first of this series was produced by hand with children’s paints, without the intention for them to ever be mass produced. This collection has been written about in such news and art press publications as The Independent, The Guardian, Newsweek, The Scotsman, Art Press, and Creative Review. Bojan  continues to work with numerous artists and media outlets in the former Yugoslavia, but Sarajevo remains the center of his creative universe. He teaches graphic design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sarajevo and directs Fabrika Design Agency in Sarajevo.
