Health Insurance

All international students on non-immigrant visas are required to purchase the health insurance plan offered by the University of Richmond. There are no exceptions to this policy. Students may wish to share this information with their parents/legal guardians.

Exchange visitors on J-1 visas are required to purchase this plan in order to meet the State Department's health insurance requirements.  Exceptions will be made for scholars coming from sponsoring agencies that have a group plan to meet the J-1 requirements or proof of current insurance that meets the J-1 requirements.  A list of requirements can be found on the State Department's website for exchange visitors.

Americans living abroad, dual citizens, and permanent residents are not eligible for this plan and will not be enrolled. For information about the domestic student health insurance plan click here.

For 2006-07 and 2008-09, United States Fire Insurance Company was the underwriter and Global Benefits, LLC was the claims administrator. Any claims dating from July 1, 2006 should be sent to the address below:

Global Benefits, LLC

For the 2009-10 year, the cost will be $101 per month for international students and scholars. Coverage will be underwritten by Pan American Life Insurance Company.

Immunizations

All incoming international students must submit a Health History Form with their application. If you did not receive this form, you may download it here. This form must be returned to the Student Health Center by the specified date or you will not be allowed to register for courses or access your residence hall!  For more information about the immunization requirements on the Health History Form click here.

Safety

All new international students should sign up for the UR Alert system and read carefully all information about emergency plans and procedures on the website, especially the current status of the University’s response to the H1N1 flu (swine flu). This system and the University of Richmond's emergency procedures will be reviewed during a mandatory orientation information session on safety in the United States.

Travel

The University of Richmond does not offer insurance for liability, trip cancellation, theft, and lost baggage. Students should purchase this in their home country prior to coming to Richmond. Click here for travel tips and regulations.
