About
the Program
University College Dublin (UCD)
Faculty of Commerce offers a summer internship program that will complement UR’s exchange
program with UCD by providing practical work experience.
Dublin has work opportunities with leading Irish and international companies
in all areas of business, such as banking, finance, international business management, information
technology, marketing, and communications. Placements are also
available in non-business fields such as humanities, arts, the sciences,
law and other social sciences. This 8-week summer program
will provide students with intensive instruction and examination in Irish
history and culture as well as valuable work experience with leading business, communications,
nonprofit, governmental, scientific and academic institutions. Students will also have the opportunity
to visit famous cultural institutions through organized excursions around
Dublin and Belfast.
Students must have
sophomore standing or above at the time of their internship and a grade
point average of 3.0 (B) or better.
Placement
Areas
The Internship placements are of a very high
quality and involve
project based meaningful work assignments. The students need to indicate
in what area they would like to conduct their Internship (see UCD online student
application form). The Internship placements will be for 30 hours per

Academic Credit
Students will receive academic credit for
the Internship (COMM 3002 Internship) and Irish History course
(SBUS30010 Colony to Republic: the making of Modern Ireland), which will be reflected as
undergraduate
transfer credit from UCD by completing the study abroad course approval
form prior to departure. This form is available from the Office of
International Education, 1st floor, Puryear Hall or from the Registrar's
Office, Sarah Brunet Hall.
The structure of the Program is as follows:
Week 1 - Intensive Course in Irish History
Week 2,3,4,5,6,7, - Internship Placement
Week 8 - Students Exams/Presentations
Students will be required to submit a detailed project/assignment on an
aspect of their placement (click
here for info). They will be required to make a short presentation on
this project in Week 8. In addition, students will be required to keep a
journal of their Internship experience. This should be submitted to their
academic supervisor in Week 8. They will also be required to submit a
detailed assignment on their
Intensive Irish History course in Week 8.
The Academic Director of the Program will grade and assess the
students on their Internship academic assignments. The Irish History
Professor will grade and assess the students on
their Irish History course.

Dates
June 8 – July 30, 2010 (arrival during the weekend of June
5-6; Monday, June 7 is a holiday)
Comprehensive
Program Fee
The
2010 program fee will be approximately $10,000 and includes UCD transfer
credit for the Irish History course and internship,
housing including deposit and utilities, internship placement and supervision, Irish history field trips, cultural excursions and social outings
through Ireland, an in-country orientation to Ireland, and health
insurance. A 100 euro application fee is not included in the
program fee and must be paid separately to UCD once a student is
accepted to the program.
Airfare,
meals, local transportation, telephone, and personal expenses are NOT
included.

is Monday, January 25, 2010. Please submit applications to Krittika Onsanit in the

A $150 deposit is due to UR by February 15, 2010. All checks should be made
out to the University of Richmond.
The deposit and Summer
Study Abroad forms should be given to Cheryl Genovese in the School for
Continuing Studies office, 2nd floor, Special Programs Building.
1st program payment of $4,675
is due March 15, 2010
2nd program payment of $4,675 is due April 16, 2010
The final two payments of the program fee are to be made
at the Student Accounts Office in Sarah Brunet Hall.

Notification
of Acceptance
Mid-February 2010
Housing
Students
will live in short-term, furnished rental housing in Dublin with other
interns on the program from UR and other universities.
Orientation and Living
in Ireland
An orientation meeting
will be held at UCD to discuss the internship placements and course
requirements.
Day Trips
Weekly fieldtrips included are day trips to Belfast ,
Kilmainham
Jail, and a Parliament
Building Tour.
The Cultural/Social Program includes Horse Racing Day,
a weekend trip to the West of Ireland visiting the Aran Islands (including
overnight Bed & Breakfast accommodation), a day trip to Glendalough, Hurling Match,
Theatre Night, Traditional Music Night, Farewell Dinner and Irish
Cabaret.
Pre-Departure
Information
General
and country-specific pre-departure orientations will be held in April for all summer program participants. Attendance at all orientation
meetings is mandatory. Topics covered include cultural issues, travel,
practical and logistical matters, and health and safety.
