The Description of Coverage (“DOC”)* provides a summary of benefits of the insurance plan and further detail of the benefits, coverage, definitions, terms, conditions, exclusions and limitations. The DOC is not a contract of insurance. The terms and conditions of coverage are set forth in the Policy issued to the University of Richmond and the Policy is subject to the laws of the state in which it was issued.

UR’s health and travel insurance covers study abroad participants while in any country except their home country. The insurance will cover illnesses and medical treatment related to COVID-19 the same as any other unforeseen sickness. The policy may cover trip cancellation and interruption if you become ill with COVID-19 before or during the trip. Otherwise, the insurance will not cover trip cancellation for a cancelled program due to changes in government, university or other regulations or if you decide against going abroad due to concern about the COVID-19 pandemic. Richmond is not able to pay for or reimburse students for fees not covered by UR’s health and travel insurance abroad policy (coverage details are available here).

Countries around the world are adapting entry policies as the COVID virus continues to mutate and thus regulations and entry regulations can change upon short notice. Quarantine Benefit: The University’s international insurance may reimburse some of the cost associated with your quarantine up to a maximum of $2,000. Symptoms of the disease causing the Quarantine must first be manifested after the start of the Trip and the Quarantine must cause an interruption or delay in the Covered Person’s Trip for which suitable accommodations are not otherwise available. In order to activate the benefit, an official COVID test by a health facility or doctor must be administered. Home tests will not be sufficient evidence for this benefit coverage.

Benefits will end on the earlier of 7 days after the Quarantine is issued or the date the Quarantine expires. Be sure to keep all receipts for additional costs for lodging and meals, airfare, and non-refundable travel arrangements related to your quarantine. Once you return to the U.S. (or your home country), you can submit a claim to ACI using the Trip Cancellation/Trip Interruption Claim Form.

Please note that the University does not determine if your claim will be paid. Possible Covered Expenses:

1. the reasonable expenses incurred for lodging and meals;
2. the cost of a one-way economy airfare ticket to either the Covered Person’s Home Country or to re-join the Trip; and
3. non-refundable travel arrangements.

"Quarantine" means the Covered Person is forced into medical isolation by a recognized government authority, their authorized deputies, or medical examiners due to the Covered Person either having, or being suspected of having, a contagious disease, infection or contamination while the Covered Person is traveling outside of their Home Country.
