Support for Semester Abroad

The Office of International Education is committed to providing opportunities abroad for UR students approved to study for a semester or year on a Richmond program abroad. Starting with the fall semester 2019, the University of Richmond will provide each UR student who studies on a UR semester abroad program with a $1,000 travel allowance.

The travel allowance will be provided as a tuition credit each semester to students who commit to study in a UR semester or year program abroad. The semester abroad travel allowance demonstrates the University’s continued commitment to study abroad by making semester study abroad more accessible for all students.

Students with need-based financial aid who have a self-help requirement (e.g., loan, work/study) will receive an additional $500 grant. For questions about eligibility for this grant, students are advised to consult with the Office of Financial Aid. Further information about financial aid and study abroad can be found here.

The university will continue to provide travel and health insurance to students studying abroad outside of their home country. This benefit is provided at no additional cost to all approved students on UR sponsored programs.

Travel Allowance Disbursement

The travel allowance is automatically applied as a credit to the student's UR account 10 days prior to the first day of class abroad, and will be listed as "UR Abroad Program Travel Allowance" on the invoice/account. Students do not need to submit any paperwork to receive the travel allowance. Students on financial aid from Richmond may contact the financial aid office for information on how this additional allowance will be factored in to the existing financial aid package.

After paying all of the UR charges listed on the bill, you may request a refund by direct deposit of any remaining funds from the Student Accounts Office. For more information about direct deposit, call Student Accounts (804-289-8147).
