2019 UR Summer Study Abroad Programs

What will you be doing this summer?

It’s impossible to understand other cultures without living in them, and summer is the perfect opportunity for immersion within a shorter timeframe. Experience new cultures, challenge yourself, increase your language proficiency, or connect with a new culture and arrive home enriched and better prepared for the global proficiency increasingly required for your career after graduation. UR's summer study abroad options are especially suited for student athletes, STEM majors, and others who may have difficulty being away from campus for traditional semester or academic-year programs.

For 2019 UR offers a variety of study abroad destinations in Europe and Russia, plus Japan. In addition to the benefit of experiencing another culture intensely, students also travel and study with UR professors and earn UR credit.

Expected Summer Study Abroad Timeline

It's important to plan in advance for a summer program. Use this time line to help guide you through the process:

  • Application cycle opens Dec 1
  • Applications due February 15
  • Non-refundable deposit due March 1
  • First payments due mid-March
  • Final payments due mid-April
  • Programs begin between late-May and late-June

Contact with Faculty

The faculty leader listed on each program page is an important contact as you determine which program is your best match, and they will review your application and determine approval to participate. Be aware some programs have prerequisites including some language requirements, and enrollment is limited. Note University of Richmond faculty serve as leaders of all Summer Abroad programs but some classes may be taught by qualified faculty of partner institutions.

Scholarships and Financial Aid

Some undergraduates who study abroad during the summer may be eligible for financial aid, including Direct Loans. Using these loans in the summer will reduce a student’s Direct Loan eligibility for the following academic year. Please contact the Office of Financial Aid for details. The merit-based Holt Summer Study Abroad Scholarship awards approximately $2,000 per participant who is studying on a language-based program. The deadline for applications for Summer 2019 is February 15; see here for details. Other academic departments may also offer scholarships for summer study.
