Study Abroad in Denmark this summer.

Copenhagen: Europe in Theory and Practice

May 9 to June 10, 2022 (five weeks hybrid)

  • Intensive online coursework before departure (May 9 – May 12)
  • Travel to Copenhagen, Denmark (May 14 – May 28)
  • Independently completed final project (May 30 – June 10)

This hybrid online-study abroad summer program will look at the idea of Europe as it has been defined by critical theorists and as it is experienced now in different parts of the European Union. We will look at a number of political, social, economic, and cultural issues that give us a better sense of what it means to be European in the twenty-first century.

In the online portion of the course, students will learn about the history of the European Union, as a concept and as a political reality. They will learn and discuss topics that they will then explore on the ground during a two-week learning experience in-country: freedom of the press and secularism in multi-cultural societies, social welfare models in different European countries, technological innovations driving green capitalism, and the political influence of the degrowth movement.

During the two weeks abroad, students will revisit these topics from a Danish and Scandinavian perspective with local experts and a series of experiential learning opportunities.
