Trinidad, Jamaica, Panama, Cuba - 2011

Twelve faculty members representing departments across the University traveled to Trinidad, Jamaica, Panama and Cuba. To help prepare for the seminar, participants discussed texts selected by the group, and made presentations from their disciplinary perspectives. The group also met with the following University of Richmond experts prior to departure:

  • Daryl Dance, Professor of English (Caribbean literature and folklore)
  • Mike Davison, Professor of Music (Cuban jazz and music scene)
  • Kelling Donald, Associate Professor of Chemistry (Jamaica overview)
  • Claudia Ferman, Associate Professor of Spanish (Real Dirty Havana documentary discussion)
  • Manuella Meyer, Assistant Professor of History (history of the Caribbean region)

During the 2011-12 academic year, seminar participants shared outcomes with students and colleagues through various channels: study abroad advising, campus presentations, faculty exchanges, reports, and a draft of a module or course syllabus.

Jeremy Drummond, assistant professor of studio art, curated an exhibit for the Carole Weinstein International Center Gallery, featuring photographs and videos of the Seminar. The exhibit was on display spring and summer 2012.
