Weinstein Grants for Students
The Office of International Education offers merit-based grants for international projects or internships undertaken abroad during the academic year or the summer. These grants are intended to foster and support a wide range of ideas and activities that will enrich applicants' knowledge and appreciation of other cultures, contribute to the international identity of the University of Richmond, and productively engage the community and organization where the project will be located. Grants will be awarded for original project proposals which preferably build on the student's previous experience and knowledge.
All full-time, continuing students are eligible to apply; students will be funded only if they will be on campus during the semester following their project.
The University of Richmond does not permit students to use University funds to travel to countries under U.S. Department of State Travel Alert Level 3 unless the student has received specific approval from the Office of International Education. Review the University's policy for more information.
If a project involves the use of human or animal subjects, final approval of the Institutional Review Board for Protection of Human Subjects or Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee must be granted before an award will be made.
A committee will be convened to review submissions and award the grants. All applicants will be notified in writing regarding the final status of their application.

Weinstein Grants for Academic Year Projects
Weinstein Academic Year Grants are accepted on a rolling basis and are for independent projects pursued during the current academic year. Applications are to be submitted online by clicking the application link. The application period for 2018-2019 Academic Year grants closes at 11:59 PM on Jan. 14, 2019.
Weinstein Academic Year Grants are reimbursement-based, will be limited to $2,000 per person, and may only be accessed by submitting original receipts. Please note that you may not receive the total amount you request. Amounts awarded are based on available funding.
If, after being notified of your award, the location(s) or basic description of your project changes or if sources of additional funding are made available to you that exceed your anticipated expenses for this project, you must submit a written explanation of the changes to Ellen Sayles so the Weinstein Grant sub-committee can re-approve your project. Failure to do so may result in denial of reimbursement of your expenses.
Awardees must submit receipts for reimbursable expenses to Miriam Zarin within 30 days of recipient’s return to campus in order to access their grant funds. Reimbursable expenses include:
- Reasonably-priced economy class transportation to and from destination country
- Public transportation (bus / subway) while in country (taxis for use in emergency situations and with appropriate justification)
- Reasonable economy-class accommodations
Food expenses will be handled based on per diems, rather than individual receipts. Therefore, grant recipients do not need to submit receipts for food purchased abroad. Rather, recipients will receive the daily Meals & Incidental Expense rate (the “M & IE Rate”) that the State Department indicates is the per diem for the area of the world to which the recipient travelled. Recipients must print out a screen shot of the State Department’s website showing the per diem amount. If you have questions regarding per diems, please consult the Controller’s website.
Weinstein Grants are only for the recipient’s expenses. For any receipts in which the recipient paid for others’ expenses, the recipient must indicate on the receipt what charges were his/hers. All funds not used within 30 days of the recipient’s return to campus will revert to the originating grant account.
