Prague: The Idea of Central Europe
May 23 – June 24, 2023 (five weeks)
Prague is a spectacular European city that calls itself “the spiritual crossroads of Europe.” For centuries, Prague was home to Europe’s Holy Roman emperors and Austro-Hungarian royalty. During the Cold War, Prague’s complicated fate was was emblematic of the communist era in Soviet-controlled Czechoslovakia. A “Velvet Revolution” in 1989 ended decades of communist rule, and launched a playwright-philosopher with a love of punk rock into the Presidency of a newly independent Czechoslovakia. Today, Prague is one of the most popular destination cities in Europe, for good reason: it dazzles visitors with its architectural splendor, its free-spirited, bohemian temperament, and its distinctly Czech culture of innovation and resilience. While Prague will provide the home base, this program also includes field trips to places tourists never go. Coursework will explore topics such as democratization, immigration, nationalism, and many others. Students take two courses for a total of two units on the program.
